WORKSHOP 3
Qualitative Research Methodology in the Digital Era
Synopsis:
The rapid expansion of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how qualitative research is designed, conducted, analysed, and presented. Yet, beyond efficiency and automation, critical methodological questions remain: How do digital tools affect and reshape meaning making? What happens to reflexivity, interpretation, and researcher positionality in digital and AI-assisted analysis? And how can qualitative scholars maintain methodological rigour while embracing digital innovation?
This workshop bridges methodological tradition with digital transformation, positioning qualitative inquiry as adaptive, critical, and future-ready in the digital era while preserving the complexity of human elements. It explores the integration of digital tools and AI within qualitative inquiry, particularly in education and TVET contexts. Participants will be introduced to applications across the research process from digital data collection (i.e., e-interviews, virtual ethnography, online focus groups) to AI-assisted coding, transcription, and thematic development. The session will also critically examine epistemological implications, ethical considerations, data authority, and the risks of over-automation.
Key Areas:
1.) Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Methodology.
2.) Conducting qualitative inquiries using digital tools, virtual interviews, and social media data.
3.) Utilising AI to assist in literature reviews and thematic coding of qualitative data.
